CLOSED COOLING TOWERS

HomeCLOSED COOLING TOWERS

Closed cooling towers

Closed-type cooling systems that keep the fluid to be cooled (called primary fluid) inside a circuit isolated from the outside. The thermal exchange process takes place through a built-in pipe bundle exchanger. Water (called secondary fluid) is used as cooling fluid; it is directly sprayed on the exchanger by means of a distribution system and it is continuously recirculated inside the machine. In its turn, the water is cooled by its own evaporation, fostered by a constant airflow.

Design features: Structure

The main structure is in hot-dip galvanized steel. Different materials can also be used upon request. The structure is reticular type, lightweight and very strong. The fan deck is walkable. The cladding is manufactured in FRP sandwich type panels.

Fan section

The ventilation is induced draft type: the fan is installed in the upper part of the cooling tower. The electric motors are equipped with all the special features to avoid water entrance and condensation. Motors are bolted on a steel support, welded inside the fan stack. The fan is coupled directly to the motor shaft. The fan is equipped with high performance blades. The fan stack is protected by a metal safety grid.

Cooling water distribution system

Cooling water distribution system

Cooling water is uniformly distributed on the external surface of the heat exchanger by a distribution system manufactured in PVC.

PP nozzles are no-clogging type. In case of maintenance, they are easily replaceable. According to the latest (anti-legionella) sanitary regulations for cleaning purpose, the connecting pipe between the circulation pump and the internal distribution system is easily removable.

Heat exchanger

Shell and pipe bundle heat exchangers are manufactured with smooth carbon steel tubes. Pipes diameter, thickness and geometry are optimized for the specific application. The exchanger surface is hot-dip galvanized for perfect corrosion resistance. For particular applications, it is possible to supply stainless steel exchangers.

Drift eliminators

Drift eliminators

The drift eliminators are made up of modular elements, in PVC or PP sheets. The efficiency of the separator is excellent, such as to limit water losses due to dragging to a value below 0.005% of the circulating flow.

Louvers and water basin

Made in polypropylene with a honeycomb structure, louvers are designed for induced draft counter flow cooling towers. They mainly perform two functions:

  • to channel the incoming air flow,
  • to eliminate the water splash-out from the tower.

The basin is made up of fully welded steel sheets (painted or galvanized): the basin bottom is smooth and inclined in order to allow the complete water drainage during emptying and to prevent the formation of biological agents, such as legionella. The water recirculation pump is installed next to the basin, on a steel structure directly connected to it.
