HYBRID PLUME-ABATED COOLING TOWERS

HomeHYBRID PLUME-ABATED COOLING TOWERS

Hybrid and combined dry-wet cooling systems

We provide sustainable cooling systems with a strong economic basis, and environmental impact.

While wet cooling ensures high efficiency for the power generation cycle, the associated evaporation and blow-down of cooling water imposes various environmental and ecological impacts:

  • The humid plume emitted by the wet cooling tower contributes to visible fog formation and icing of roads in cold weather.
  • The constant evaporation and blow-down of cooling water requires substantial amount of make-up water, that limits its availability for municipality, industrial and agricultural consumption.

In order to eliminate these problems, we provide design and supply cooling systems using the principle of combined wet and dry cooling.

Dry-wet natural draft cooling towers

  • Smaller footprint compared to fully dry cooling towers
  • Substantial water savings compared to wet natural draft cooling towers
  • Higher power generation output then by all-dry cooling systems
  • Secure cooling system in volatile environment and weather conditions in long term
  • Additional security by operation of cooling system in tertiary circuit
  • Optimized total cost of ownership including lower maintenance and service costs than by traditional wet natural draft cooling tower
  • No visible plume above the cooling tower
  • Available space for installation of other technologies inside of the cooling tower optimizing the footprint of the power plant

Dry-wet mechanical draft cooling towers

  • Combination of dry and wet cooling
  • Substantial water savings compared to wet cooling tower
  • No icing in winter conditions
  • No visible plume in winter conditions
  • Suitable for cold climates
  • Suitable for urban and critical environments (e.g., chemical plants)
  • Higher year-round power generation than
with all-dry systems, while water consumption remains significantly below the level of evaporative cooling
  • Smaller investment for the same heat rejection than with an all-dry cooling system

Hybrid plume-abated cooling towers

  • Combination of dry and wet cooling
  • No visible plume in winter conditions
  • Colder temperatures: mainly dry part is in operation
  • Warmer temperatures: wet part extension supporting dry part
  • Tangible water savings compared to wet cooling tower
  • Low noise operation
  • Possibility of grey water use
  • Low operation and maintenance cost

Power plants cooled by conventional cooling solutions are highly water-intensive processes. Given the increasing problems with water availability and droughts the existence of dry cooling offers an excellent alternative solution: it has no adverse environmental effects, while freeing power plants from dependence on water sources.

Power plants are competing for the limited water resources with the growing population, the existing or newly developing industries and agriculture. Thus deciding for power plant dry cooling may give chance for further development of a whole region by preserving water for future economic expansion and have the possibility in the future to provide reliable, continuous power generation regardless of water shortages.

Being an expert of dry and wet cooling systems, we have a solid competence base to find solution any possible water saving initiatives in power plants. We will help your cooling system fit into the environment with safe and seamless operation and will reduce the water consumption of your cooling system by 60-100%. Even for existing power plants.
